I’ve been reading a lot of comments on various sites lately. Method recently released a viral ad called “Shiny Suds” which, IMHO, was made in very poor taste (or just without thinking clearly).

This comment is the one I agree most with. It’s well tempered, to the point, and it provides descriptions of words people might not understand, such as “rape culture.” The original ad site posts did everyone a disservice by claiming the outrage was over Method’s “condoning rape.” Watching the video, you don’t see any raping going on. But the woman is naked, in the shower, clearly uncomfortable, verbally harassed in a way that a bunch of construction workers would to a lady on the street. But amplified. (I think of the rape scene in The Accused when Jodie Foster’s character is being gang-raped on the pinball machine, and the guys all around are cheering and chanting. Or just think of that high school girl who was gang raped outside her school with the same scenario.)

“Rape culture” does not mean that popular culture brainwashes people and makes them rapists. You’re missing the point here, but its quite possible that the point was poorly made in the first place, so fair enough.

The idea is that popular culture often perpetuates gender ideas that tell us that rape is not something to be taken seriously. That men are supposed to be sexually aggressive and entitled and that women are supposed to put up with it, and that complaints about mistreatment of women are not to be taken seriously. “Lighten up lady!” This ad concludes with an embarrassed naked woman cringing, and that’s supposed to be funny. That really undermines the idea that sexual harassment is something to be taken seriously. Check out the “hollaback” websites if you want to know why this is an issue.

The kind of harassment that the ad uses as a joke is real, and it is sometimes frightening. A lot of men don’t really understand how frightening it can be, and this ad doesn’t help. That kind of harassment can feel like (or even BE) a prelude to rape. And this ad perpetuates the idea that women should get over it. As someone who’s married to an actual woman who has to walk around in public, I don’t want to live in a culture where anybody thinks that this is not serious.

Its not that this ad is going to encourage anybody to be a rapist. Its that this ad encourages the viewer to think that sexual harassment (and the scenario in the ad, as silly as it is, is really upsetting if you really consider it) is funny. It isn’t.

The original poster’s thoughts are pretty indicative of most of the apologists going around. Though I’ve seen worse.
